Overwhelming aid for flood victims

Over two million euros for flood victims: Our readers are supporting the victims of the mid-July floods in our region through our charity, "People Helping People." Our newspaper readers are always ready to help people who have fallen into hardship through no fault of their own. But this wave of support and willingness to donate is unprecedented. "Anyone who delves deeply into the extent of the flood's impact sometimes thinks: That's too many blows of fate all at once," says Editor-in-Chief Thomas Thelen, who is also Chairman of the "People Helping People" charity. "When disaster strikes right on your doorstep, it affects you all the more deeply."

The "People Helping People" campaign is approaching its work with the necessary discretion, appropriate oversight, and the required knowledge of local conditions. "We rely on a network built up over decades in our region," says the charity's Managing Director, Bernd Büttgens. “We want to ensure that donated funds reach those who need them most.”

The funds will be used primarily to help households that have been hit particularly hard. Each individual case is carefully examined. And every euro will be used. The people at “People Helping People” work entirely on a volunteer basis. This also applies to the advisory board, which was established specifically for the flood relief effort to provide external expertise and support.

Thomas Thelen emphasizes: “Our relief effort is designed to last for months because we are witnessing how this crisis will affect those impacted over a long period. We will continue to monitor the situation and will regularly report on our relief efforts and the situation of those most affected in our region. And I want to emphasize: donations are still welcome!”
